MBA institutes are not Job Agencies.

MBA institutes are not Job agencies !!

As a student pursuing an MBA degree at The George Washington University, I quickly learned that obtaining a degree is just the beginning of a successful career. Contrary to popular belief, graduating from a prestigious business school does not guarantee immediate job placement. However, this is not a reason to despair. Your personal effort and proactive job search strategies are the key to success in a competitive job market.

As an MBA student, I am sure you will be disheartened when you encounter the following news:

  • Ankur Sinha, Chairperson at IIM Ahmedabad, admits to the challenging nature of this year’s placements, forecasting a 10-15% reduction in offers from top multinational firms[I].
  • Ravi Handa from IIM Lucknow reveals a startling truth: 72 candidates out of 576 at IIM-L do not have job offers. Similar challenges persist at other B-schools[ii].
  • IIM-Kozhikode reports that 75-80 students are still struggling to secure employment, reflecting a grim reality amid the job market downturn[iii].
  • When compared to last year, there is a drop of at least 20-30% both in the final placements as well as for summer internships among the newer IIMs, a faculty member said.[iv]

These updates underscore a new reality: MBA schools are not just placement agencies. They are institutions that equip students with skills, knowledge, and networks for success. Graduating from a prestigious institution is still a significant achievement, and it equips you with a valuable set of skills and knowledge. While it may not guarantee immediate job placement, it positions you well in a competitive job market. It’s now a fierce competition where your preparedness and proactive strategies are paramount.

In today’s competitive job market, relying solely on campus placements is no longer enough. As an MBA student, it’s crucial to take control of your career journey from the start. Waiting for opportunities to come to you is a luxury you can’t afford. Networking is more than just attending events; it’s about actively engaging, forming meaningful connections, and using them to uncover job prospects. Internships and informational interviews are also key to expanding your professional network and exploring potential career paths.

While MBA institutes provide valuable resources and support, success ultimately depends on your efforts. Debashis Chatterjee, director of IIM-Kozhikode, rightly asserts that “IIMs are not placement agencies but primarily responsible for making students capable.”[v] Employers seek candidates with practical skills, relevant experiences, and a proven track record. Therefore, focusing on building marketable skills is crucial. Whether through internships, volunteer work, or independent projects, seizing every opportunity to enhance your skill set makes you more attractive to employers.

Adaptability is crucial in today’s dynamic job market. Industries and job roles are constantly evolving, demanding a willingness to embrace new opportunities and an attitude of continuous learning. Being open to change and actively seeking growth are essential for long-term success.
In conclusion, while the post-MBA job market presents challenges, it’s not impossible. With the right approach, you can navigate these hurdles and position yourself for success.
